Education requirements

There are several education requirements for becoming a podiatrist. Before becoming a podiatrist, students must complete an undergraduate degree, medical school, and a residency. Education requirements for this profession vary by state, so it is essential to check with your state’s licensing requirements. There are also specialised certifications in various areas of foot care, including pediatrics, sports medicine, and orthopedics.

To become a podiatrist, applicants must complete a four-year bachelor’s degree program, graduate from one of the nine accredited podiatric medical schools, and pass the National Board examinations. In addition, applicants must complete and pass both oral and written examinations. Students take the National Boards during medical school, consisting of Part I, which tests their science and health knowledge. Part II involves a written examination covering areas of medicine, radiology, and orthotics.

Once a candidate has completed the requirements for entering a medical school, they must earn a doctorate in podiatric medicine. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree, including a science background. In addition, a DPM is required to practice as a podiatrist. The DPM program generally takes four years to complete. Students are also required to complete a three-year residency. Learn more about Inertia_Health_Group podiatrist Adelaide.

Areas of practice

During residency, podiatry residents study the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot and lower limb. They also study human gait and other neurological conditions and may specialise in a specific area. For example, some practitioners work in community health centres or orthopedic groups. Some focus on treating wounds above the distal tibial tuberosity.

Doctors of podiatry can specialise in orthopedics, sports medicine, and primary care. Certification in these fields comes from national podiatric specialty boards. In addition, DPMs may choose to participate in national and regional professional organisations.
